How to spot fake Cleto Reyes boxing gloves

Cleto Reyes is one of the most counterfeited boxing glove brands in the world. These fakes are often manufactured in bulk in Pakistan and sold through eBay, Etsy, Alibaba, and third-party Amazon sellers. They look passable in photos, but they feel like cardboard in person.

My Experience with Fakes

I have owned five pairs of real Cleto Reyes over the years. My very first pair turned out to be fake, but I did not realize it until I finally felt an authentic pair. Since then, I have had to send back two more fakes - one purchased from Amazon and one from a store in Los Angeles. They were so poorly made that the shape alone gave them away. The silhouette was off and bulky with an oversized thumb area. They looked nothing like the compact, distinctive Reyes profile I knew.

The Quick Checklist: 9 Ways to Spot a Fake

If you are worried about your gloves, check these nine red flags immediately.

1. The Price

Authentic Cleto Reyes retail between $150 and $250. If you see them for under $80, they are fake. There are no exceptions to this rule.

2. The Seller

Check the official Cleto Reyes website for their list of authorized distributors. eBay and Etsy are high risk. Even Amazon is not safe unless the seller is verified.

3. The Shape

Real Cleto Reyes have a distinctive silhouette with a compact knuckle box and a narrow wrist. Fakes look bulkier and more generic because they use standard mass-produced molds.

4. The Smell

This is the dead giveaway. Real Reyes use goatskin leather with a strong, distinct leather smell. Fakes smell like plastic, chemicals, or nothing at all.

5. The Logo

On authentic gloves, the back panel logo is embossed into the leather. It is raised and slightly reflective. On fakes, the logo is flat and printed like a cheap decal. One thing to note: the embossed logo on authentic gloves can fade with heavy use over time. That is normal wear. But it should never feel like a cheap print that disappears after a couple of sessions.

6. Serial Number

Genuine gloves have a code on the wrist strap area and a holographic seal on the box. If either is missing, it is not a real pair.

7. Weight Tag

On real gloves, the weight tag is on the side of the cuff. Counterfeiters consistently put the tag at the bottom of the cuff.

8. Stitching

Real Cleto Reyes use tight, consistent double stitching. Fakes use single stitching that is uneven and loose, especially around the thumb and palm.

9. Origin

Every authentic pair is handmade in Mexico City. If a listing says made in Pakistan, it is a counterfeit.

Why Fakes Are Dangerous

Buying fakes is not just about losing money. Counterfeit gloves use cheap foam that collapses almost immediately. This leads directly to wrist and knuckle injuries. I learned this the hard way with my first pair. My hands were sliding inside the glove slightly during training, and I ended up with a long-lasting wrist injury because of it. I did not connect the two at the time, but looking back, the poor internal construction and lack of proper support were the cause.

If you want the real experience, buy from an authorized dealer and verify the gear before you put your hands in.
