Lab Verdict

The quality and durability are exactly what you expect from Reyes same standard as the Full Face, same leather, same craftsmanship that holds up over years of use. Protection is solid where it matters, and visibility is superb. The honest tradeoff: it runs a bit top-heavy and feels slightly bulky up top compared to leaner training headgears. Not a dealbreaker, but you notice it during longer sessions and faster head-movement work. If you're used to a low-profile open face, there's an adjustment.

Bottom Line

The original Cleto Reyes face-bar design - 11 colours, natural leather, 20.5 oz, but no competition approval and slightly less nose room than the Redesigned.

Solid value for the protection offered.

Who This Is For

The Cleto Reyes Traditional is the original - the face-bar design that has shaped Mexican for generations and that virtually every other manufacturer has referenced in their own designs. It combines a lightweight nylon front bar with natural leather and latex foam padding in the cheeks, forehead, and chin, delivered through the brand's three-point anatomical closure: lace-up at the top, hook-and-loop at the rear, and an adjustable chin strap. At 20.5 oz it is one of the lighter face-bar options available, and the fit improves substantially once the leather breaks in over the first few sessions. With 11 colour options across S, M, and L sizing, it offers the widest palette in the Reyes sparring range. The key trade-off against the Redesigned - priced identically at $259.99 - is that the Traditional carries no USA Boxing or World Boxing approval and has a slightly tighter nose profile. If competition legality matters, go Redesigned; if you want the heritage design, this is it.

Who It's Not For

  • Competition (no sanctioning approval)
  • Those needing more nose clearance (see Redesigned)

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • The original Cleto Reyes face-bar design - the template every manufacturer has copied for decades
  • Handmade in Mexico from natural leather with latex foam in cheeks, forehead, and chin
  • Lightweight nylon front bar keeps the profile slim while protecting the nose bridge - 20.5 oz total
  • Three-point anatomical fit: lace-up top, rear hook-and-loop, adjustable chin strap
  • 11 colour options - the widest palette across the sparring Reyes lineup
  • S, M, L sizing for a precise fit
  • 2–5 year lifespan with 3–5 sessions per week; leather breaks in beautifully over time

Cons

  • No USA Boxing or World Boxing approval - use the Redesigned if you need competition certification
  • Original nose-bar profile sits closer to the face than the Redesigned - less nose room
  • Same $259.99 as the Redesigned, which has USA Boxing approval and more nose room
  • Genuine leather requires a 3–7 session break-in before it conforms to your face
  • Currently sold out in many colours across major retailers
